Officials are investigating the death Wednesday of a Pima County corrections officer who was on duty at the Superior Court building downtown.

At about 11:30 a.m., officer Brian Krumm “suffered a fatal gunshot injury” in the building at 110 W. Congress St., according to a Wednesday night Pima County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Sheriff Mark Napier said the officer was in a secure area that wasn’t accessible to the public.

Officials believe he was alone at the time, Napier said.

Napier said there was no danger to the public and no suspects were outstanding. Initial emergency radio calls described the incident as a shooting.

The building was locked down for a period of time before reopening.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information was released.

“This is an incredibly sad day for our department,” Napier said. Krumm was a 13-year employee of the department, the release said.
