Bart Peterson, center with bell, with his wife, Cori, left, and nominator Stephanie Bernstrom, right.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is β€œbelled.”

Last week’s recipient: Bart Peterson.

Nominated by: Stephanie Bernstrom.

Why: Peterson is an athletic trainer at Palo Verde High Magnet School. He ensures that all Palo Verde athletes are prepared and ready to play with safety as his main goal. He travels with teams to ensure athletes are cared for during sports events. He checks up on students during off hours with calls to their parents, doctors and staff members to make sure they are OK, Bernstrom wrote in her nomination letter. Palo Verde students are also learning life lessons by examples from Peterson. He teaches them to be kind, polite and respectful. Moreover, in his sports medicine classes, he focuses on preparing students for life beyond high school and college, Bernstrom wrote. Students are taught they can physically and mentally succeed in any profession, even if they do not continue in sports medicine. Peterson has also taken on numerous responsibilities at the district, state and western region level. He has participated on a national level on issues that concern him, such as concussions suffered by athletes. The school has received safety awards because of his dedication, Bernstrom wrote.
