A pedestrian struck and killed Thursday, May 18, in midtown was identified as Arnulfo Bustamante, police said.

Bustamante, 47, was struck by a car traveling east on East 22nd Street and South Bryant Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m., said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. The area is near South Columbus Boulevard.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics treated Bustamante at the scene and took him with life-threatening injuries to Banner-University Medical Center where he died, said Dugan.

Traffic detectives determined that a silver 1996 Volvo was traveling east on 22nd Street in the curb lane. A witness reported seeing Bustamante run south across 22nd Street at the intersection of Bryant, and as Bustamante entered the curb lane, he was struck by the car, Dugan said.

The driver of the car remained at the scene. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash, said Dugan.

He said due to signs of possible impairment, a DUI investigation was conducted. Detectives are waiting for results to determine if alcohol may have been a contributing factor for both the driver and the pedestrian, said Dugan.

Since January, there have been 23 traffic fatalities in the city, compared to 18 at this time last year, police data shows.
