County road tax

Slowed at just about every turn to find money for road repairs, the Pima County Board of Supervisors will consider a property tax increase.

The board of supervisors are set to approve a final $1.27-billion budget Tuesday, June 20, one the county administrator is recommending include a 14-cent property tax hike to cover road repairs.

The Pima County supervisors approved a tentative budget with the hike with a 3-2 vote on May 23. The increase is intended to cover part of a proposed 25-cent roads property tax, whose estimated $19.5 million annual proceeds would go toward local street work. The remainder of the 25-cent tax would be canceled out by reductions in other county-controlled property taxes.

For the average homeowner, the increase would result in a $23 jump in annual property tax burdens.

The supervisors will also discuss the prospect of a half-cent sales tax for the 2018-2019 fiscal year β€” not the coming year. The supervisors are asked to provide direction on such a measure, not actually approve it, on Tuesday.
