A father and adult son were struggling for control of a handgun when an officer fired his weapon and wounded the son, Tucson police say.

Officer Gustavo Castro was one of the officers who went to a house in the 1300 block of North Falcon Ridge Drive about 8 p.m. Wednesday after neighbors called police to say people were fighting in front of a house and one of them had a gun, Sgt. Pete Dugan, a police spokesman, said in a news release Saturday.

The father and son were fighting for the gun when it fired. Castro, who has been a TPD officer for more than three years, then fired his gun, striking the son, Dugan said.

The man’s injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening. He remains hospitalized. He was later identified as Eyan Gastelum, 25.

A criminal investigation into the fight continues. Simultaneously, the department is conducting an administrative review of the officer’s actions, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
