(UPDATED 12:30 p.m.) Storms that dropped nearly 3 inches of rain in some areas of  Tucson on Tuesday morning will gradually taper off this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The area will remain under a flash food watch until Wednesday evening as moisture associated with Tropical Storm Javier moves into Southern Arizona. Storms this afternoon will likely be to the west of metro Tucson, the NWS said.

Some areas of Tucson received nearly 3 inches of rain in the morning deluge.

Pima County Regional Flood Control District gauges recorded a six-hour total of 2.76 inches at the Santa Cruz River and West Grant Road. Also, 2.40 inches of rain has been recorded by a gauge at South Craycroft Road and East Golf Links.

Other six-hour totals show ranges of 1 inch to nearly 2 inches of rain across the metro Tucson area. The University of Arizona is reporting 2.7 inches of rain at the campus. The Tucson airport had received .86 of an inch of rain by 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

About 2 inches of rain was recorded in gauges on South Country Club Road near East Ajo Way; 1.8 inches fell at Reid Park; 1.73 inches were recorded at East Skyline Drive and North Swan Road; Green Valley saw 1.26 inches of rain, according to flood control district gauges.

The university sent out an alert saying the main campus is open, but advised people shouldn't try to make it in because of the road conditions.

The morning rain has caused some street flooding, forcing officials to close the Stone Avenue underpass downtown, and Grant Road at I-10 as well as Ruthrauff Road and I-10.

  • Sahuarita Road from Wilmot Road to Comsoft Drive
  • Westover Av btwn Velencia Rd and San Paulus Rd at the wash
  • Silverbell Rd btwn Sweetwater Dr and El Camino Del Cerro
