NOGALES —Santa Cruz County has declared a rabies quarantine due to more than two dozen rabies cases since November .
Why:
Four bats and 24 skunks have been confirmed with the infection between November 2012 and March 26, according to a resolution passed by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors declaring the quarantine.
How Long:
The county’s quarantine is in effect until December 31.
What should you do:
All unvaccinated dogs and cats in Santa Cruz County should immediately be vaccinated against rabies.
Some quarantine rules:
- Dogs should be confined to the owner’s property or kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet and should remain in the owner’s control when not on the property.
- Loose dogs will be impounded and disposed of.
- People should not feed wildlife or leave pet food outside after sundown. Compost bins and piles must be enclosed and be skunk and rodent proof.
- People should not release trapped animals or tamper with traps.
