Several significant wildfires continue to burn in Southern Arizona:

Flying R Fire

The newest fire, which began Wednesday, is burning on Coronado National Forest land southeast of Patagonia. The fire was about 60 percent contained Thursday. It has burned about 2,300 acres of grass, brush and timber. Burnout operations conducted were responsible for a large amount of acreage burned.

Lizard Fire

Minimal growth of the fire was reported over 24 hours in the blaze near the community of Dragoon.

The fire has burned more than 15,000 acres and was 70 percent contained Thursday. Crews were extinguishing hot spots south of Mount Glenn and calling in for helicopter water drops as needed.

The fire began June 7 and still poses a risk to residents in the Cochise Stronghold area.

Frye Fire

The fire on the north side of Mount Graham near Safford is being fought indirectly because of the treacherous location β€” in the burn scar of the 2004 Nuttall Complex Fire. The fire, which also began June 7, has burned about 800 acres.

Containment lines have been completed around 15 percent of the fire as of Thursday. The fire is burning in timber, downed logs, heavy brush and dead trees.

There are numerous closures of trails, campgrounds and roads associated with the fire, which was started by lightning.
