Marian Lupu

Hillary Clinton held a round table discussion with seniors at the Armory Park Senior Center in 1996. Here, she addresses a question by Marian Lupu (cq).

Shiva gatherings to remember Tucson elder advocate Marian Lupu will be held at the Tucson Jewish Community Center this week, her family says.

Lupu died at her Tucson home Sunday with her family at her side. She was 91.

The shiva gatherings are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at the Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road.

Everyone is welcome to the gatherings. Shiva refers to a mourning period in Judaism after someone has died.

Her family says that the shiva gatherings for Lupu will be a time for the community to come together, share memories and to help mourners take the next steps on the journey of living.

The Lupu family says there will be time to socialize at the beginning and a brief service starting approximately 30 minutes after the scheduled start. There will also be time for anyone who wishes to share stories about Marian.

Plans for a celebration of life, probably later in October, will be announced later, the family wrote in a Facebook post.

Lupu founded the Pima Council on Aging and was its director for 40 years β€” waiting until she was 82 to step down and even then continued on as a consultant.

Her former co-workers and others who knew her credit Lupu with creating a system of services and resources for aging Pima County residents.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the non-profit ballet organization Dancing in the Streets, Arizona 6411 E Brian Kent St, Tucson, AZ 85710, or www.ditsaz.org/
