Sunlight dances over the water of Silverbell Lake. Ducks quack. A great blue heron swoops out of the sky. And angler Tony Caporaso casts his line, perhaps hoping to pull in another catfish for the frying pan.
It’s a clear, calm, blue-sky morning over the lake northwest of Tucson — one of the city’s prime spots for catching the easygoing vibe of summer over the Memorial Day weekend and beyond.
Fishing is a key component of that vibe for many who visit the 13-acre lake, which is in Christopher Columbus Park at 4600 N. Silverbell Road.
“I’ve caught a small catfish and a couple of small bluegills today,” said Caporaso, who spent a recent morning fishing from the tree-shaded lakeshore with Roger Matsumura. “I’m using worms for bait. The fish like them.”
He said the two visit the lake about once a week for fishing and relaxation in a pleasant setting.
A sign at the lake notes: “To fish at this lake a valid Arizona community fishing, general fishing or combo hunt/fish license is required. Children age 9 and under do not need a fishing license.” The sign also lists catch limits for various types of fish found in the lake.
Others visit the lake to walk along the water and enjoy a variety of birdlife ranging from ducks to blue herons.
Views from the shore take in distant ridges of the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson and several species of tall, mature trees.
