Thick smoke billowed through the air Wednesday morning near the Sweetwater Wetlands where Tucson firefighters were conducting their annual controlled burn.

The burns have taken place annually since 1999 as a way to support the Mosquito Abatement Program, provide firefighter training and to keep invasive plants in check, according to the Tucson Fire Department.

Tucson Water and the fire department worked in two phases to complete the work. The first phase occurred on Oct. 1, with the second phase occurring Wednesday morning.

The wetlands, located at 2511 W. Sweetwater Drive, west of Prince and I-10, will be closed to the public until Friday.
