A sonic boom caused shattered windows across the small town of Globe, about 100 miles north of Tucson.

An Air National Guard F-16 pilot who took off from the Tucson International Airport unintentionally broke the sound barrier during a training mission, an Air Force spokeswoman said in a statement.

"Since this incident, the wing has received reports of property damage in the region. Residents or businesses who believe they have suffered property damage as a result of this event can file a claim by calling (520) 954-0146.

While training is a vital part of the 162nd Wing's mission, ensuring positive environmental stewardship is of paramount importance," the statement concluded.

Locals sounded off on Facebook.

  • "I thought a semi ran into our house!!!" said Colleen Knowlton. "My house, you can't hear anything inside... My house felt like it came off the beams... The whole neighborhood was outside!!! I have broken windows."
  • "It shook my entire house," said Rose Marie Kenyon Cooper. "When I went outside to see what the heck happened and heard the jets. I realized that is was a sonic boom. They were very low. Scared the crap out of my kids.
  • "What we heard was the sound of freedom," said Kaycee Reece.Β "Replacing windows is a small price pay for our freedom. Thank you Air Force!!"
