A worker with Borderland Construction makes a pass over fresh asphalt with a roller Thursday as crews tackle the first day of paving for the new Sunset Road improvement with an overpass connecting Silverbell Road and Interstate 10. Paving work continues from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday . Silverbell Road traffic continues normally, but flaggers are on site to slow the flow. The $22.8 million project, which is funded by Pima County and the Regional Transportation Authority, consists of a three-lane roadway and the construction of a new bridge across the Santa Cruz River along with an at-grade intersection with the existing I-10 eastbound frontage road. The project also includes intersection improvements and turn lanes at Silverbell Road and at Sunset Road at I-10. It is expected to be completed by spring of next year.
