Lightning strikes over downtown, part of a monsoon storm sweeping through the valley, Tuesday, July 26, 2016, Tucson, Ariz.

Thunderstorms bringing heavy rain and possible flash flooding may hit Tucson on Tuesday, Aug. 9 β€” moisture associated with Tropical Storm Javier, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms may remain through Thursday and affect Arizona, New Mexico and the southern portions of Utah and Colorado.

Tropical Storm Javier, forecasted to remain below hurricane thresholds, is expected to dissipate near Baja California, according to the weather service.

By Tuesday morning, moisture from the storm is expected to come up the gulf and bring rain with more falling at night and on Wednesday.

The weather service says up to 2 inches of rain may hit the area, along with blowing dust and lightning.

There is a possibility the storms may only clip the southeast corner of Arizona and have more of an impact on southwest New Mexico.

However, a flash flood watch will be in effect for southeast Arizona from 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, until 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, states the weather service.
