Elizabeth Shaw, adviser to the Optimist Club at Rincon, holds a bell.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Elizabeth Shaw.

Nominated by: Cassandra Peel.

Why: Shaw is an adviser to a group of students at Rincon Vista Middle School called the Optimist Club. The club made care packages for hospice patients and their care givers. The care packages included toiletries, soaps, lotions, playing cards and inspirational messages. For caregivers, the group made “teacups of love” with dark chocolates and tea, wrote Peel, a volunteer at Desert Harmony Hospice. “She encourages her students to make a difference in the community by being kind to those who are facing the end of their lives, along with their caregivers who face tremendous stresses and feelings of anticipatory grief,” Peel wrote in her nomination letter.
