162nd Wing / Arizona Air Guard

An F-16 aircraft taxis toward a Tucson International Airport runway for a flight at the Air National Guard 162nd Wing.

An F-16 Fighting Falcon based out of the Arizona Air National Guard's 162nd Wing crashed about 20 miles northwest of Safford at 3 p.m. on Tuesday , officials said.

Rescue efforts are underway and the status of the pilot is unknown at this time. The 162nd Wing is based at Tucson International Airport and conducts training across Southern Arizona.

The Air Force has assembled an interim safety board to investigate the incident and additional details will be provided as soon as they become available, according to the wing's public-affairs office.
