Police say they arrested a driver in connection with a collision Tuesday at South Park Avenue and the freeway ramp that fatally injured a motorcyclist.

The Tucson Police Department gave the following account in a news release Wednesday evening:

The crash between a GMC Sierra and a Honda motorcycle occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the area of South Park and the eastbound Interstate 10 entrance ramp.

First responders took the motorcyclist, Nicholas Steven Kazmar, 49, to Banner-University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, and he died after arriving at the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Sierra driver's failure to yield while making a left turn at an intersection is the major contributing factor of the collision, detectives determined.

The driver, Adrian Chavez, 21, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by a moving violation. He was cited and released.

Detectives determined that Chavez was driving the white 2016 GMC Sierra southbound on Park Avenue and trying to make a left turn onto the I-10 ramp when his vehicle collided with the northbound black 2006 Honda VTX1300 motorcycle ridden by Kazmar.

Chavez stopped and cooperated with the investigation. He was not impaired by alcohol or drugs, police said.

"Drugs and alcohol were located in Mr. Kazmar’s motorcycle; however, it is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were present in his system until medical records are reviewed," police said in the news release.
