Tucson firefighters save 4 rabbits in fire caused by burning weeds

A neighbor woken by heat coming through her bedroom window early Saturday notified Tucson firefighters of a house fire, officials say.

The woman called the fire department to a house in the 1700 block of South Regina Cleri Drive about 3:30 a.m., Capt. Andrew Skaggs, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman said in a news release.

The house was empty except for four pet rabbits. They were all removed from the home and appeared to be OK, even one initially found to be especially lethargic, Skaggs said in the release.

Damage from the fire was mostly limited to the outside of the house.

An initial determination says the fire likely started near a wood pile after weeds were burned the previous day, Skaggs said.
