A Tucson resident has been arrested in connection with the crash that killed a bicyclist in Sierra Vista on Tuesday afternoon.
Sierra Vista police said Jared McDonald, 31, was booked into the Cochise County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, negligent homicide, manslaughter, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, and DUI drugs.
Police said McDonald was driving a van that struck and killed David Alva, 71, of Hereford, as he rode his bike on the shoulder of Buffalo Soldier Trail just south of Garden Avenue at about 1:30 p.m.
Investigators determined that Alva was riding his bike southbound when the driver of a white 2003 Dodge Caravan left the road and struck him. Alva was pronounced dead at the scene.
McDonald was found to be under the influence of an intoxicating drug and arrested at the scene, Sierra Vista police said in a news release.
