Tucson police have identified the 34-year-old woman killed Tuesday night after she was struck by a car on the north side of town.
Katie A. Tucker was treated at the scene and taken to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but was pronounced deceased at the hospital, Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokesman, wrote in a news release.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., police officers and Tucson Fire Department paramedics went to the area of East Fort Lowell Road and North Castro Avenue, for reports of a serious injury crash involving a bicyclist.
TPD traffic detectives continued the investigation and learned that Tucker was riding westbound on Fort Lowell in the curb lane, passing through the intersection of Castro. The driver of a beige 2000 Ford Focus was also traveling westbound on Forg Lowell in the curb lane, and began to merge into the median lane, checking the mirror, the release said.
The driver changed lanes before seeing Tucker in front of the car and was unable to stop, crashing into her, according to the release.
Witnesses said that Tucker made and abrupt left turn from the curb lane directly in front of the car. She was not wearing a helmet, the release said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Neither speeding nor impairment seem to be factors in the crash, and no citations or arrests have been issued, the release said.
