Amphitheater High School teacher Jose Salcido, left, is congratulated by a student after he received a $5,000 grant.

A Tucson teacher was surprised during a high school assembly Tuesday with a $5,000 grant from the Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers program.

Jose Salcido, of Amphitheater High School, was one of more than 4,200 teachers who applied for the grant with hopes of providing more engaging activities for his physics students.

He and about 150 other Arizona teachers were selected at random to receive the $5,000 grants.

While grant recipients will continue to be revealed over the next few days, three other Southern Arizona educators have been honored since awards began being distributed on Nov. 7. They are:

  • Shannon Post, of Presidio School in Tucson, who submitted her wish application for 14 Chromebooks.
  • Mary Beth Gray, of Wilson K-8 School in Oro Valley, who submitted a wish for tablets for her classroom to provide interactive lessons.
  • Melissa Matias, of Huachuca Mountain Elementary School in Sierra Vista, who submitted a wish to revamp her classroom into a technology-friendly environment and more comfortable and innovative space.

In addition to the financial gift, selected teachers have the opportunity to be recognized on-field at the 29th annual Cactus Bowl at Chase Field.
