Summer heat record eludes city

The midafternoon sun beats down on Chris Duraz as he adjusts signals at a road-widening project at North La Cañada Drive and West Orange Grove Road. It was 108 degrees Wednesday, a record for the date.

It's been a mild few days, but temperatures will begin climbing again today, preparing for near-record to record-breaking conditions by the middle of next week.

Tucson also experienced a significant heat wave at the same time last year, with record-breaking temperatures peaking on June 19. It looks like we're on track to peak around the same time, but that peak-period will last a little longer.

Records could be broken in many locations across the state, and Excessive Heat Warnings are already in effect for this weekend into early next week for much of southern and central Arizona.
