The Humane Society of Southern Arizona has just added 60 kittens to its roster of pets, in an effort to help the Yuma branch, which is currently “overwhelmed with kittens” of its own, officials said.
On Thursday, a volunteer with the Humane Society of Yuma made the five-hour drive to Tucson, after the HSSA agreed to take the kittens into its care, said spokeswoman Vanessa Ford.
“We currently have over 600 animals in our care”, Ford said. “Kitten season has definitely come to Southern Arizona. We’re looking for people who would like to become foster volunteers to help us with the influx. We always need the help, especially this time of year.”
The kittens have already been placed in foster homes, but the majority of them are expected to be ready to adopt by early July.
Yuma officials are just beginning to discuss the need for spaying and neutering the county’s feral cat population, said HSSA’s chief operations officer, Brandy Burke.
“When we see cases like this, it underscores the need for everyone to do their part at the local level to help keep pet population under control,” Burke said.
