A Tucson woman has filed a claim against the city, saying that her dog was severely injured by two police K9s who escaped from their handler’s home when he wasn’t there, documents show.

The Chihuahua mix, who needed two surgeries after the Sept. 29 incident, suffered puncture wounds to the left shoulder as well as other serious injuries. Cynthia Weeks, the dog’s owner was also hurt during the attack, according to a claim filed with the city.

The dogs’ handler, Officer Chris Fenoglio, wasn’t home when his two K9s β€œeasily escaped” through the front door of his house as Weeks was walking by with her two leashed dogs, the claim says.

Fenoglio’s son was the only person at the residence during the incident, and was unable to control the police dogs.

An incident report was filed with the Tucson Police Department. The status of the investigation, or any subsequent discipline against Feneglio, isn’t clear.

The city has 60 days to respond to the claim before Weeks can file a lawsuit in Pima County Superior Court.
