What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”
Last week’s recipient: Hester Rodgers.
Nominated by: Connie Sieverding.
Why: Rodgers is involved in the SaddleBrooke Friday Quilters and the Tucson Quilt Guild. After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Rodgers took it upon herself to initiate a donation drive to help the quilting groups in the Corpus Christi area. She successfully gathered donations from Tucson and Phoenix. She rented a truck in Phoenix to bring all the donations back to Tucson. Donations included sewing machines, fabric, quilting rulers, sewing machine needles, thread, pins, quilt kits and more, wrote Sieverding in her nomination letter. Rodgers worked with a group to sort and put together quilters’ kits for those who lost everything and perhaps did not have insurance. These donations eventually filled a room in her home, half her garage and another half of a neighbor’s garage, Sieverding wrote. After working with two quilting guilds in Texas, Hester rented a 15-foot U-Haul truck in January to deliver the donations. Hester did this at her own expense and expected nothing in return. Hester’s actions are truly an act of thoughtful kindness. Sieverding wrote.
