Women's March on Washington - Tucson

A phrase famously coined by Hillary Clinton, "Women's Rights are Human Rights," is painted onto a poster by Susan Marder during a poster making event at the Sam Lena-South Tucson Library, 1607 S 6th Ave. on Friday January 06, 2017. People gathered at the library to make banners and signs for the Women's March on Washington - Tucson March taking place on January 21.

Rain or shine, thousands of people are expected to descend on the streets of downtown Tucson this morning for the Women's March in Tucson and solidarity rally.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. at Armory Park, 221 S. 6th Ave., with musical performances and speakers, including Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, former Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives Victoria Steele and newly-elected Arizona house member Kirsten Engel.

The half-mile march begins at 11:15 and ends at the Joel D. Valdez Library Plaza, 101 Stone Ave, with a closing rally. Musical performances will greet marchers and speakers will talk about how our city and nation are stronger when we come together and are inclusive of everyone.

Speakers at the second rally, which is expected to start at about noon, include Congressman Raul Grijalva, Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias, Councilwoman Regina Romero and representatives from a half-dozen other community groups. The rally is expected to wrap up by 3 p.m.

As of Friday afternoon, nearly 5,000 people had RSVPd on the event's Facebook page, and 4,500 responded as "interested."

The march route will be closed to traffic, but the streetcar will still be operating under the direction of Tucson police.
