What's The History Of Black Friday?

The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, has become one of the year's busiest shopping days. But few people know the true meaning behind why it is called "Black Friday." Many say the term comes from the concept that businesses operate “in the red” until the day after Thanksgiving. And that the massive sales finally allow them to make a profit and put them “in the black.” However, this is false. The most accurate explanation of the term dates back to the early 1960s and police officers in Philadelphia. Officers used the phrase “Black Friday” to describe the chaos caused by people beginning their holiday shopping. The phrase “Black Friday” didn’t become known nationwide until the late 1980s.
