Day of Caring

Last year, thousands of volunteers took on a variety of odd jobs as part of a project to help those who help others all year long.

Starting Tuesday, the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona will start taking requests for projects for their next Days of Caring, which this year will be Oct. 19 and Oct. 22.

Yard work, painting, sorting and cleaning are among the most common requests. Schools, child-care centers and local nonprofits are asked to submit specific details about what they need to have accomplished.

Aug. 5 is the deadline for submissions.

Last year, volunteers took on the following:

  • Quik Trip employees raked, swept and cleaned up the campus at Cragin Elementary School.
  • Students with the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management took on projects at Empire High School, Jewish Family & Children’s Services and dozens of other sites.
  • GEICO employees sorted clothing at the Amphi Foundation Clothing Bank and helped out at Children’s Museum Tucson.
  • IBM employees carried out projects at Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona Camp Whispering Pines, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Therapeutic Riding of Tucson and Our Family Services.
