Travel on Interstate 10 southeast of Tucson will become difficult over the next several months.

The Arizona Department of Transportation plans to start work this week to replace a bridge at Davidson Canyon east of the city.

It’s part of a $15.2 million project that includes the bridge replacement and repaving of more than 17 miles of interstate.

“Seventeen miles is a pretty big chunk of pavement,” ADOT spokesman Dustin Krugel said.

Krugel said motorists can expect some delays beginning on Thursday, when workers start to tear down the bridge at Davidson Canyon.

Westbound I-10 will be reduced to one lane during the work, which is located near milepost 285.

But that’s just the first of several restrictions and closures motorists will see.

ADOT plans to close the interstate overnight on at least six nights during construction.

The first of those is scheduled for sometime in October.

During the closures, westbound traffic will detour 67 miles around the site on Arizona 90, Arizona 82 and Arizona 83.

Krugel said the Davidson Canyon Bridge dates to the 1960s.

Both phases of the bridge demolition and reconstruction project are expected to be completed by spring 2016.

While the bridgework is ongoing, crews will also begin the first phase of 17 miles of repaving.

ADOT plans to start the work in October.

The complete section to be resurfaced stretches from about the junctions of Arizona 83 and Arizona 90 near Benson.

The stretch of interstate receives heavy daily traffic, and delays are expected.

“We’re looking at daily traffic counts from 23,000 to 28,000 cars,” Krugel said.

The Davidson Canyon area is also heavily traveled, with an average of 27,000 daily cars.

Paving work is expected to be complete by June 2016.

Down the road

The Tucson Department of Transportation plans to begin repaving a small section of Sixth Street on the west side of Country Club Road on Monday, Aug. 24.

Work will begin at approximately 7 p.m., and is scheduled to be completed by 9 p.m.

Paving work is scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m., and is scheduled to be complete by 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

During the work, at least one lane of travel in each direction on Sixth Street will be maintained.

The work is part of the Country Club Road resurfacing project, between Speedway and Aviation Parkway.

• An open meeting is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department’s plan to install a 1-mile section of sewer line along 22nd Street.

The meeting will be at the Patrick K. Hardesty Midtown Multi-Service Center at 1100 S. Alvernon Way, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Construction boundaries are from Alvernon Way to Swan Road. The work includes installing new 12-inch sewer pipe along 22nd Street, adding a sewer pipe beneath the Alvernon Way-22nd Street intersection and installing lines across the intersection at Swan Road and 22nd Street.
