PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey is dropping a plan to help reduce recidivism among state prisoners by establishing an employment training center for soon-to-be-released inmates at a Maricopa County jail complex in south Phoenix.
Ducey wanted to use the recently closed Tent City jail site at the Durango Complex for a 335-bed employment training facility and a 265-bed community corrections center but his office says state officials concluded after talks with county officials that the site "is not the ideal location at this time."
Some elected officials, business leaders and community leaders had opposed using the site for the re-entry facility, saying that part of Phoenix already has jails, a prison and a large homeless shelter.
Ducey's office says his proposed new state budget will address recidivism efforts.
