In this 2013 file photo, workers at the Postal Service’s Cherrybell station in Tucson process mail. The service moved processing to Phoenix as a cost-saving measure.

Members of the state’s congressional delegation are citing deficiencies in mail service to southern Arizona as they ask that the U.S. Postal Service be required to carefully study any consolidation of its operations.

A joint letter by Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Martha McSally and seven of the state’s U.S. House members asks congressional leaders to ensure that any postal legislation include provisions to require the Postal Service to collect updated data before consideration of additional consolidations.

Service in the Tucson area has suffered since the Postal Service earlier this decade partially consolidated its Tucson mail processing center, according to the letter.

The lawmakers say they’re confident that a new data analysis would show that additional consolidation of processing facilities is not warranted.
