Snow in the Catalinas

Above: While Amber Engel, 6, front, looks to be enjoying the sled ride, mom Tania appears just a bit more concerned as they play in the remaining snow accumulated near Bear Wallow along the Catalina Highway. Many visitors on the road to Mount Lemmon mentioned they came up in anticipation of snowfall Tuesday that didn’t come.

Continued rain in the Tucson area and snowfall in higher elevations has caused some road closures.

The Pima County Department of Transportation has notified residents that Catalina Highway remains closed at the base except for residents and employees driving cars equipped with chains and four-wheel drive.

Also on the far east side, Wentworth Road is closed at the Tanque Verde Creek.

Tanque Verde Loop Road also is closed at the Tanque Verde Creek.

PDOT also has identified numerous areas where motorists should proceed with caution. These include:

  • Overton Road at the Canada Del Oro Wash
  • Wilmot Road from Andrada Road to Sahuarita Road
  • Snyder Hill Road between Sandario Road and the edge of pavement Soldier Trail at the Agua Caliente Wash
  • Old Ajo Hwy between Ajo Highway and San Joaquin Road
