Migrants

Re: the Dec. 8 letter “Providing shelter for migrants.”

This letter was right on: “The immigrants should stay in their own country ...”. This is exactly what all of the true locals have said about the Europeans for generations now. They were also “running to the United States for a better life” which is why most of us are here.

Can we afford to believe more of his lies?

After calling out President Joe Biden for his cognitive lapses, saying “(Biden) can’t put two sentences together,” Donald Trump has proven his own derangement (“Person, woman, man, camera, TV.”), and he continues his miscues.

The Bumbler reported at the New York Young Republican Club, a major benefactor of his, that Leticia James sued ExxonMobil and they moved to Dallas in 2019. He added, “Great job, Letitia. And that’s what’s happening right now. Businesses are fleeing our country. Businesses are leaving our ... this whole horrible system ...”

Dallas is in “... our country.” ExxonMobil moved there in 1989.

Are we in Sioux Falls or Sioux City? He campaigns against Obama, not Biden (stirring up racial unrest?). “Whether it’s Israel or really major countries.” “I will only be a ‘dictator’ on Day One.” “Ted Kennedy told me that Joe Biden was one of the dumbest people in Congress.”

“MEXICO” will pay for the wall! WHO? MEXICO!”

To date, Trump’s penetrable, crumbling border wall has cost taxpayers over $12B.

Biden and inflation

Re: the Dec. 12 letter “Gas prices and the US president.”

The letter writer is “anxiously awaiting” citizens to thank President Biden now that gas is “under $3 a gallon”. Really? Let’s review. When Biden won the election in Nov. of ‘20, gas was $2 a gallon due to the Trump administration. Biden effectively regulated the US oil industry into not producing oil which drove it up to near $5 a gallon (remember that?). In absence of US oil production, Biden also depleted our oil reserves (intended for emergency conditions) from 638 million barrels to 347 million barrels in July ‘23 (lowest since 1983). Now, with the next Presidential election looming, the pumping has “magically” resumed and prices have come down to $3 a gallon (still $1 a gallon higher than with Trump). IF Biden, or another Democrat, wins the next Presidential election what logical person doesn’t think that gas prices will skyrocket once again? And, don’t get me started on inflation (which we ALL feel every time we pay utilities or go to the grocery store).

Guns!

Dear AZ Daily Star,

I am so sick and tired of all the attention being paid to the AR-15 rifle that I’m ready to throw up! The AR I’m told, does NOT jam in combat, (a retired Marine told me)!

So what? Yes, they’re wonderful in a war and can probably blast a big hole in a huge buck in the wild, okay, if you’re feeding a family, and there’s no grocer in a hundred miles. Go for it! (I ate venison growing up in CO.)

Now tell me, what does all of this have to do with the wanton killing of people at Safeway, Walmart, innocent school children, Jews, Muslims, Asians, or gays?

Instead, let’s figure out how to protect our kids, other innocent human beings, and enact measures to protect us ALL from people who seriously need help. We are ALL sitting ducks (or deer)! HELLO!

Race and gun crimes

Re: the Dec. 14 letter “Gun crimes.”

So, you want to talk about race? A recent writer suggested we should spend our time examining Black on Black crime. In the US, mass murders are committed most often by white (almost always male) perpetrators. You can add up mass murders by every other racial group and white shooters still outnumber all of them combined. Definition of obfuscation.

Hamas and Israel

The war between Hamas and Israel has resulted in further division of our country. Those who don’t support the preferred position are being wrongly labeled as racists or anti semitic. Academic institutions, which have to walk a fine line between being bastions of free speech and diversity, while providing safe environments for all students, have come under political attack. I acknowledge the October 7th attack by Hamas was a despicable terrorist act. While I initially supported the Israeli response, I am sick and tired of the daily spectacle of Palestinian children and innocents being torn apart by indiscriminate bombing. I have since modified my stance. I stand against the Hamas and Netanyahu regimes! I am on the side of innocents. This madness must stop!

Truism?

I believe it was the character Pappy Maverick (Bret and Bart’s father in the 60’s western) who said, “One man’s political embarrassment is another man’s jail term.”

As a long-time scientific researcher, I am absolutely appalled at the prospect of my colleagues having even higher percentages of their grant funding appropriated for the purposes of bailing out the U of A over financial mismanagement, almost as much as I am as a sports season-ticket holder seeing my prices go up perhaps as much as 25% for the same reasons. Although I trust that there will be a reckoning regarding the continued employment of those university officials directly involved in the matter, I wonder if the highest level of administrators intends to demonstrate any remorse or accountability by, say, returning 25% or more of their salaries to the university as atonement for their lack of oversight.

Patriotic due diligence

Re: the Dec. 20 letter “Trump vs. Biden on policy.”

This ain’t Kansas anymore ... it’s Arizona ... where we do our patriotic and citizenship due diligence and research the issues and solutions without regard to the politics and deceptions that surround us. Truth, honor, integrity and respect are the foundation of our beliefs and decision-making. The issues at the border are the fault of decades of neglect and failure to address the real causes, not one president. There is much more to the China “syndrome“ than that meets the eye on the surface that you address. Our inflation rate is falling approaching the rate midway through Trump’s term. Wars in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza are not the fault of any one president. Climate change is real and green energy is the future. And as far as the media is concerned, good journalism is the foundation of our democracy, and should be respected and not attacked.

To believe in the life of LOVE

To walk in the way of HONOR

To serve in the light of TRUTH

Uphold the Constitution: Back the Colorado Supreme Court

Editor,

Trump to appeal Colorado ballot removal at U.S. Supreme Court: the implications affect more than Donald Trump. If the Supreme Court upholds Colorado’s ruling that insurrectionists are not qualified to run for office, some of Arizona’s Representatives in the U.S. House would also not be qualified to run for office.

It has been widely reported that Arizona Congressmen Biggs and Gosar requested to be pardoned for their insurrectionist activities.

There is much debate regarding what the Supreme Court should do. Our three branch system of government is a defining characteristic of American democracy. The U.S. Supreme Court has a responsibility to uphold the Constitution. Many insurrectionists have been barred from holding office in the past, we shouldn’t stop now.

Give “Lev” a break!

Re: the Dec. 22 article “Fisch old school in building Wildcats.”

Sports columnist Michael Lev is trying to fit into the Tucson dynamic.

And he’s starting to get it with: Less data and analytics, and more heart and soul.

In this article Lev nails the culture within the current (and hopefully long term) UA football program. He gives us a taste of what Fisch is developing — akin to what Tommy Lloyd has been putting together in our hoops program.

Both programs appear to be developing a strong bonding chemistry within, while experiencing and appreciating the surrounding culture and resources both in Tucson and throughout Arizona plus the U of A athletic community: past, present and future.

Proud of Maya Naji

Re: the Dec. 15 article “Nnaji leaves UA program to focus on academics.”

You recently published an article saying that Maya Nnaji was stepping away from basketball to focus on her studies. She is an awesome athlete and will be missed. But I was really impressed by her maturity in making this decision. In an era when most college sports stories are about making money AS an athlete, it was refreshing to see a student make a choice to be a student...and to become a doctor. I love our Wildcats sports as much as anyone, but I’m absolutely delighted to know Naji has bigger goals in her sights. Well done, Maya! Best wishes!

Merry Trumpmas

Re: the Dec. 25 letter “Our ex-president.”

It was good to read a letter submitted by a veteran expressing his feelings about Trump, especially noting his disparaging of our veterans (suckers and losers according to Donald). I’ve often wondered how any veteran or military person could support this person. I won’t call him a man. Did you enjoy Donald’s hateful, vindictive Christmas message? — “May they all rot in Hell — Merry Christmas”. A very sad commentary on America that such a person is deemed by many to be acceptable and even more incredible — fit to be president.

Biased polling

Re: the Dec. 26 letter “Poll shows fraudulent mail-in ballots.”

The letter writer who mentioned the Heartland/Rasmussen poll on mail in voting needs to remember that polls are often wildly incorrect depending on the poll methodology and interpretation. Heartland is a conservative/libertarian think tank, while Rasmussen poll results often reflect the beliefs of those that pay them to run the poll. Never trust just one poll when trying to validate your own beliefs. This “confirmation bias” is seen from both sides of the political spectrum, which is why you have to take all polls with a grain of salt. I’d hate to think that assisting an elderly or infirm relative to vote is now considered “voter fraud”.

For the rest of your life?

Re: the Dec. 27 letter “Selling fascism.”

The letter writer states the case quite succinctly ... including straightforward words describing the perpetrators and the realities of fascism! Those words aren’t a script with a plot for actors, they are about real people and real circumstances. You don’t get to walk out of the theater afterwards, back to your previous life, to once again contemplate over a hamburger how you put those “other people” in their place, you now belong to somebody else.

That somebody else, Mr. Trump, doesn’t care about you or your children. What he wants and needs is constant self-gratification, and what he wants from you is the non-thinking adulation that will provide what his affliction require, demands, quickly, so he can avoid consequences he has already earned.

Those thousands of immigrants he likes to denigrate and blame on President Biden are also real, and worth a lot more than being a political football. And you and I are worth a lot more than what Mr. Trump will do with us.

Think about it!

Day one

Donald Trump wants to be a dictator on day one. This makes sense since “The Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project,” directed by right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation, wants the Executive Branch of the U.S. government, including more than two million civilian employees working at government agencies, under direct presidential control. The goal is to dismantle the “administrative state” that is impeding the GOP’s conservative agenda. You know, the agenda that does not believe in reproductive freedom for women, finds gun violence acceptable in our society, and has forsaken national security. Donald Trump would be the perfect vessel for the GOP as dictator on day one.

Do you like receiving your Social Security and Medicare benefits? Do you want to breathe clean air and drink clean water? Do you want to take out a student loan to go to college? If so, re-elect President Joe Biden. He believes in democracy and has the wisdom, competence, and experience to work for the American people.

Which candidate is demented?

Trump’s Christmas message excoriated Joe Biden as crooked, Jack Smith as deranged, and Nancy Pelosi as crazy. He gave us a laundry list of personal grievance, and even went after electric car drivers. He ended with “may they rot in Hell. Merry Christmas.” In contrast, Joe and Jill Biden wished us peace, health, and happiness. They talked about kindness, giving, and gratitude. I hope this clarifies the choice of what kind of country we want, and who we want running it.
