English usage

Re: the March 2 letter “Say what?”

I am amazed that an English teacher would blame “political correctness” for the use of the pronoun “they” when describing a non-binary person because THEY were confused in thinking that “they” must refer to multiple people. Not to mention the absurdity of having to use “she” when referring to someone who “certainly appears to be female.”

There’s hope!

This morning (March 2), as I stood around the corner from the Fox, in a long line to hear Jill Biden and Maya Harris celebrate the two-year anniversary of Tucson’s Arizona List, which promotes Arizona women to run for office, I noticed just ahead of me, a group of young teen boys, all Black and Brown. Were they in the wrong line? Nope, they sat two rows in front of me, filling an entire row in the Fox. Seeing them there made my day.

The double R divide

When pollsters try to cut and dice and analyze why voters are either a Republican or a Democrat, it often comes down to two words: Racism and Religion.

Gaza woes

A recent television clip showed a heartbreaking scene of thousands of desperate Palestinians overwhelming a food truck, creating such chaos that Israeli soldiers were forced to use gunfire. One hundred were reported killed, and thousands wounded in the stampede.

Following a path started by the Jordanians, the U.S. also began to airdrop much-needed food. I was astounded later to see a clip of two Palestinian men holding up a U.S. MRE (meals-ready-to-eat) and complaining at the top of their lungs that “this is not food to feed a family”. Perhaps my military friends could describe what is contained in this meal, but to me, food is still food when people are starving. In the face of looming famine, so much more is needed. If the attacks on the food trucks continue, there will be few willing to drive into Gaza at the risk of bodily harm to themselves.

President Robbins pay cut

Regarding UA President Robbins’s voluntary pay cut:

10% is merely performative.

50% would have been better.

100% less the cost of a one-way economy-class ticket to any place outside Arizona would be best.

Juan Ciscomani

As the former Chairman of Pima GOP, I am alarmed by the continued coordinated barrage of anti-Ciscomani letters the Star publishes nearly every day. These unwarranted attacks on a good man and faithful public servant must stop! He has been true to his campaign promises and beliefs. Juan is strong on border security and adherence to our immigration laws; the 2nd Amendment; education, including early childhood; strengthening families (he and Laura are the parents of three boys and three girls); a strong economy; and proudly pro-life. And best of all, he works with Republicans and Democrats alike for a better CD-6, and America. Don’t believe the ugly letters in the Star or the attack ads on TV, paid for by out-of-state Progressive PACs. In a District evenly divided between Republicans, Democrats and independents, Juan is just the person we need to represent us in Washington!

Presidential election

Yet again, we seem confronted with the binary choice of Biden or Trump. The Ancient Mariner vs. The Don Who Would Be King. One surely must be better than the other. The dilemma? Which one? Or perhaps one is worse than the other? The dilemma? Which one? But there is an easier way.

Luck be a Lady tonight. Three rounds of chance to be contested. Best two out of three anointing one winner. No hand counts, no shady attorneys, no Scotus appeals, no drop boxes, no signature verification, and no Proud Boy insurrection. The decision is final. Though would it really matter were it not?

Round One — Rock Paper Scissors

Round Two — Silver Dollar Coin Flip

Round Three — Bicycle Poker Deck Cut High Card Wins Jokers Wild (of course they are)

Contested April 1, 2024. Capitol Mall Washington DC. High noon. Justice John Roberts Head Referee and Chief Flipper (of course he is).

But oddly, we have two losers. We, the people, are as well. Isn’t it always the case?
