As I lit Hanukkah candles this week, I read heartbreaking news of babies freezing to death in Gaza. Then I read the shocking Dec. 31 op-ed by Andrew Katz. Don’t believe the facts and figures you hear about people killed in Gaza, he tells us. My question to him is, “How many civilian deaths -- children's deaths -- are acceptable to you?” Jewish teachings tell us: “Whoever destroys a single soul, destroys an entire world; whoever saves a single soul, saves an entire world.”

While some parse statistics of those killed and the meaning of the word genocide, the fact remains that people in Gaza continue to suffer from starvation, homelessness and bombing in an area the size of metropolitan Tucson. Many more will die, made possible in part by U.S.-made weapons and U.S. tax dollars. A ceasefire and end to the occupation -- not more killing -- is what will help all of the people in the region.
