I wish to compliment Mr. Marriah Star for his op-ed column (12/27/24) arguing for constructive changes to the U.S. Constitution. He correctly identifies ways that political parties (one especially) have exploited constitutional loopholes to weaken democracy and give a tiny but extremely wealthy minority frightening control over our government.
Mr. Starβs recommendations to amend the constitution to limit campaign contributions, prevent the U.S. Senate and electoral college from locking in minority rule, and strengthen the checks and balances would greatly strengthen our democracy.
Unfortunately, a constitutional convention today would be controlled by what FDR called the “robber barons.” Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and Mike Johnson would be in charge. The most evil robber baron, Charles Koch, has drafted changes to the Constitution that would do the exact opposite of what Mr. Star proposes. The Koch draft, available at conventionofstates.com, has already been adopted by 18 state legislatures and introduced in nine more.
Todayβs Constitution must be preserved and protected.
