A major winter storm is affecting the northeastern US, with nearly 59 million people under weather alerts. Snowfall could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour, with totals of 1 to 2 feet in some areas, the National Weather Service says. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide emergency and put National Guard members on standby, warning of strong winds and coastal flooding. Over 10 inches of snow have already fallen in parts of New York and New Jersey as Winter Storm Hernando intensifies. About 40 million people are under blizzard warnings, with another 19 million under winter storm alerts from North Carolina to Maine. Flight tracking data shows roughly 5,500 US flights were canceled on Sunday, with hundreds more delayed. New York City has a travel ban from 9 p.m. Sunday to noon Monday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency, closing schools and roadways to all but emergency vehicles.
