From left, Louis Mueller and Zach Wilson, employees with Net Zero Solar, hold their signs up to passing motorists while opponents to increased rooftop solar energy rates gather outside of the Arizona Corporation Commission downtown.

On the night of Aug. 30, Tucson Electric Power customers like me turned off the lights in our homes from 8:30 to 9 p.m. to protest the utility’s attempts to derail rooftop solar. It’s upsetting to me that TEP wants to charge new rooftop solar customers around $30 more per month, in its proposal to the Arizona Corporation Commission.

This would hurt people who want to deploy solar power on their homes, while disregarding many of the benefits that solar provides to our community β€” cleaner air, a way to fight climate change and reducing the need for expensive coal power plants. As a resident of Tucson and a TEP customer, I chose to participate in this act of solidarity in order to send a simple message to Tucson Electric Power: Solar power is here to stay and TEP must back down from this harmful plan.
