The Houston Astros selected Arizona right-hander Cody Deason in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB draft.

After shutting out then-No. 8 UCLA, Arizona Wildcats junior Cody Deason has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week.

The right-hander struck out a career-high 11 batters and threw his first career complete game as Arizona defeated UCLA 2-0 Thursday.

Deason allowed five hits and one walk while throwing 90 of 139 pitches for strikes. He became the first UA pitcher to hurl a shutout since JC Cloney in Game 1 of the 2016 College World Series finals against Coastal Carolina.

Deason improved his record to 5-4 and lowered his ERA to 2.36. He leads the Wildcats in innings (72 1/3) and strikeouts (72) and has limited hitters to a .197 batting average.

Deason is the first Wildcat to be named Pac-12 pitcher or player of the week this season.

Arizona (28-17, 10-11 Pac-12) returns to action Tuesday night against Grand Canyon. The final midweek home game of the season starts at 6 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcats put themselves back in the postseason picture by sweeping the Bruins. Arizona was 36th in RPI through Sunday after starting the week at No. 60.

The UA has three conference series remaining, starting with a three-game set at Cal Friday-Sunday. Arizona will play at Sacramento State on Monday before hosting rival Arizona State from May 17-19.

The regular season concludes with a three-game series at Oregon from May 24-26. The 64-team field for the 2018 NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday, May 28.
