Wildcats baseball team returns home

An anonymous donor has pledged $1 million to the Arizona baseball program, one day after the Wildcats fell 4-3 to Coastal Carolina in the College World Series championship game.

The donation is part of a matching gift exchange, meaning the donor will match up to $1 million raised by the The Wildcat Club. The Wildcat Club has already begun taking contributions here. The money will be earmarked for the baseball program, specifically for renovations to Hi Corbett Field, fan amenities and what the UA calls "other improvements for student-athletes."

Coach Jay Johnson called the gift "a major difference-maker for our program."

“It reaffirms to me how great it is to coach at Arizona where people care so much about our program and especially the student-athletes,” he said.

The Wildcats finished the 2016 season with a 49-24 record, and were one win shy of the fifth College World Series championship in school history.
