Departing Arizona forward Trey Townsend will join the New Orleans Pelicansâ NBA Summer League team next month, according to Draft Expressâ Jon Chepkevich.
Townsend averaged 8.2 points and 3.9 rebounds as the Wildcatsâ starting power forward last season after a standout four-year career at mid-major Oakland. He won the 2023-24 Lou Henson Award as the top mid-major player in college basketball and helped Oakland upset Kentucky in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

While efforts to reach Townsend recently have been unsuccessful, Michigan-based reporter Griffin Beers posted that Townsend worked out for Milwaukee, Brooklyn and Toronto leading into the NBA Draft.
Chepkevich also reported that former Salpointe star and Tennessee guard Jordan Gainey will join the Suns for the NBA Summer League. Gainey played for Salpointe when his father, Justin, was an assistant coach under Sean Miller at UA and helped the Lancers win the Arizona 4A championship in 2020.
Arizona is expected to have at least three players in the NBA Summer League: Carter Bryant (Spurs), Caleb Love (Trail Blazers) and Townsend (Pelicans). Summer League events are scheduled to begin on July 5.
