Four-star class of 2018 guard Devonaire Doutrive of Southern California has committed to Arizona, his stepfather told 247Sports.
Doutrive is now the first player in the Wildcats' new 2018 recruiting class, after their first three commits backed off in the wake of the federal investigation and an ESPN report that said coach Sean Miller allegedly discussed paying a recruit.
"It just seemed like a good fit," Laurian Watkins told 247Sports. "The whole atmosphere. You can tell when you walk in there that it was a program of prestige and after meeting with the staff and counselors, it was something we could support as parents."
The Wildcats had made Doutrive a top target this spring. UA coach Sean Miller and assistant Mark Phelps went to watch him two days after the Wildcats lost to Buffalo in the NCAA Tournament first round, in a game won by the Crossroads team of former UA recruit Shareef O'Neal.
Doutrive also took a recruiting visit to Arizona this week.ย
Known for versatility and defensive potential, Doutrive stood out at Birmingham High School, where teammate Christian Koloko is a 2019 UA target.
Doutrive is rated No. 82 overall in the class of 2018 by 247Sports, No. 85 by ESPN and No. 125 by Rivals.
"Devonaire is amazing," Birmingham coach Nick Halic told the L.A. Times before last season. "There's no guard better in the City with all his tools. To me, he's up there with all the guards in the state."
Doutrive played club ball with former UA commit Shareef O'Neal and former UA target Bol Bol on the California Supreme.ย
The spring signing period opens Wednesday. Arizona has six remaining scholarships open for its 2018-19 roster.
The Wildcats lost a commitment from five-star point guard Jahvon Quinerly in the wake of the Sept. 26 federal complaint that led to the arrest of former UA coach Book Richardson, while O'Neal (Feb. 24) and Brandon Williams (March 2) decommitted after the ESPN report.
Williams has said he's still considering the Wildcats, though he is visiting ASU this weekend and posted a picture of himself in an Oregon uniform in advance of an April 13 visit to Eugene.
