Arizona Wildcats vs. No. 15 Washington State Cougars college football

Finding a coach who can help Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate succeed might be just as important as hiring someone who will guide the Wildcats over the long run.

Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate has been named a finalist for the Manning Award, given annually to the nation's top quarterback.

Tate is among 11 players that remain in consideration. The Sugar Bowl committee will give out the award next month.

Tate emerged as one of the country's top quarterbacks after taking for an injured Brandon Dawkins in an October game against Colorado. Tate was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week four straight weeks, rushed for more yards in the month than any FBS player in the last year 10 years and led the Wildcats to a seven-win season. Tate was injured in the first half of last week's loss to rival Arizona State, and did not play in the second.

Tate is the first quarterback in Pac-12 history to top 1,000 yards rushing. His QBR of 94.1 is tops among all major-conference quarterback. Tate is responsible for 21 total scores over the last eight games.

Tate is in contention, though not one of the handful of favorites, for the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded next week. Heisman voters will send in their picks by Monday.
