A Tucson teen who fled an I-19 immigration checkpoint Tuesday night and then crashed was taken into custody by federal agents.
Border Patrol agents found a 16-year-old Mexican boy in the car's trunk who also was arrested Nov. 28. The driver of the vehicle is age 17, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in a news release.
Agents referred the teen driving a Nissan Versa for a secondary inspection after a police dog alerted to an odor in the car, authorities said. The driver fled from the checkpoint and agents chased the car, which flipped near kilometer post 63 on I-19 in Green Valley.
As agents were attending to the driver, they found the teen in the trunk.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of human smuggling and the Mexican teen on suspicion of immigration violations.
No further information was released.
