An 18-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday in Douglas in connection to an attempt to smuggle marijuana through a zip line from Agua Prieta, Sonora, federal authorities said.
Border Patrol agents seized 10 bundles of marijuana weighing more than 240 pounds. The marijuana has an estimated value of more than $120,000, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.
Agents using surveillance technology detected a person near the international border trying to hide in a vacant lot on the east-side of Douglas. When agents arrived to investigate, they found multiple marijuana bundles and the suspect, who is a resident of Douglas, authorities said.
Agents also discovered a zip line affixed to a tall building in Agua Prieta, and they notified Mexican law enforcement who searched the line's point of origin. Mexican authorities told agents that they did not find suspects.
The marijuana bundles were transported to the Douglas Station for processing, and the Douglas man was taken into federal custody on drug smuggling charges, authorities said.
