The UA's new $15 million indoor sports center may end up looking a little bit like Bear Down Gym, Richard Jefferson Gymnasium and some of the new construction around McKale Center. And maybe that's the point.
Artist's renderings of the new facility show a 65-foot-tall, long building capable of holding football practice as well as donor functions, tailgates and possibly, according to bws Architects, a beer garden.
The UA has yet to decide on the final plan, but will use elements from some of the renderings included here.
This much is certain: The indoor sports center will include a 90-yard turf field with one end zone. The facility will be built down the right-field line of what is currently Kindall/Sancet Stadium just south of McKale Center and would run the length of National Championship Drive, stretching nearly to East Sixth St. The Wildcats would still use Kindall/Sancet for outdoor practices.
The UA is expected to break ground on the facility in April, with plans to complete it by January 2019. The project is separate from the Arizona Stadium east-side renovations, which are also taking place this offseason. Those changes, which include a razed and renovated ZonaZoo, should be ready in time for the team's 2018 season opener.
Editor's note: This story has been changed to reflect that the UA has not made a final decision as to what exactly the facility will look like. The UA is expected to use elements from the renderings listed.
