Arizona quarterback Brandon Dawkins (13) last played against Utah. He is on track to return for the Oct. 29 game vs. Stanford.

For an Arizona Wildcats team desperate for good news, some might have arrived Tuesday morning.

Quarterback Brandon Dawkins, who missed the USC game because of a concussion, tweeted that he has been medically cleared to play:

Dawkins had started the previous five games, providing a running and passing threat that kept Arizona competitive. The Wildcats are 2-3 with Dawkins as their starting quarterback, 0-2 otherwise.

The redshirt sophomore was unable to finish the UCLA and Utah games because of a rib injury (Bruins) and the concussion (Utes). Freshman Khalil Tate played well in relief but struggled in his first career start against the Trojans. With no other healthy quarterbacks available, UA coach Rich Rodriguez turned to third-string tight end Matt Morin late in the third quarter.

Barring any setbacks β€” always possible with concussions β€” Dawkins should start Arizona’s next game against Stanford (Saturday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m.). Dawkins leads Arizona in rushing yards (484) and touchdowns (eight). He has completed 69 of 118 pass attempts (58.5 percent) for 941 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Wildcats are scheduled to resume practice Wednesday morning.
