Arizona's latest addition has some local flavor.
It just won't count toward the 2017 recruiting class.
Tucson High standoutΒ D.J. HintonΒ committed to Arizona and will start out as a blueshirt. Hinton was previously committed to Northern Colorado, but re-opened his recruitment earlier this week. Hinton is the son of David Hinton, a former Arizona Wildcats football player himself.Β
A "blueshirt" essentially makes Hinton a walk-on, for all intents and purposes, in the fall, which allows Hinton to participate with the team during the fall. Then Hinton will be on scholarship next season and count toward the 2018 class. Hinton said he won't report until the second day of fall camp.
This is different than the "grayshirt" in which a recruit doesn't join the team until January.Β
"I will make sure I'm ready to be the best teammate I can be when the time comes," Hinton said in a text message to the Star.Β
Hinton previously played at Salpointe Catholic before transferring to Tucson High for his senior season. The 5-8, 155 pounder is expected to play both receiver and running back at Arizona. As a senior at Tucson High, he amassed 915 total yards and 15 touchdowns, adding four interceptions on defense.Β
Hinton is rated a two-star recruit, according to Scout.com
