Arizona Wildcats spring football practice

Linebacker Marquis Ware eyes the ball into his hands at Arizona Stadium. He will be part of a defense led by new coordinator Marcel Yates. Depth issues became emphatically apparent last season when the Wildcats suffered an unusually high number of injuries, especially on defense.

It was big news when the Wildcats reeled in two four-star linebackers from Los Angeles back August of 2013 to be a part of Arizona's 2014 recruiting class.

As it goes in recruiting, though, that doesn't always pan out in the end and on Wednesday, one of those linebackers left the team β€”Β Marquis WareΒ medically retired from the Wildcats. He'll still take classes at UA without counting toward Arizona's 85-person scholarship limit.

Ware's career at Arizona ended with much less fanfare than it began with β€” he only played in two games, both in 2015, and collected one tackle. He didn't appear in any games this season.

When Ware committed to Arizona back in 2013, he was rated the 5th-best outside linebacker in the West and committed to Arizona, along withΒ Jamardre Cobb, over offers from Arizona State, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, UCLA, Florida State and 14 other schools.

Cobb hasn't fared much better β€” since arriving, he's moved from linebacker to fullback, back to linebacker, and back to fullback again at the start of this season. Cobb is currently injured and missed Saturday's game against Hawaii.

In other news, the Wildcats added a handful of walk-ons to their roster, including linebackerΒ TreΒ Tyler. Last season, as the Wildcats dealt with injuries at middle linebacker, Tyler started against Northern Arizona and recorded three tackles.Β
