Arizona subbed Jamarye Joiner (10) for Khalil Tate (14) in the second quarter, but the change didn't have the desired effect.

The Arizona Wildcats made a quick change at quarterback against Cal, and Khalil Tate's replacement was a bit of a surprise.

Freshman Jamarye Joiner took over on the third drive, and the Wildcats went three-and-out and punted. Tate, the starter, then returned for UA's fourth offensive possession. Tate completed 5 of 7 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown when Joiner, the former Cienega High School star, entered the game.

Joiner threw for 3,909 yards his final two seasons at Cienega, making him one of the state's top recruits. He was added to Arizona's "flip chart" before Saturday's game, a strong indicator that his entry into the game was pre-planned. Tate continues to battle the ankle injury that has bothered him all season, but appeared relatively healthy the first two drives.
